If i buy an att phone and its not activated, can i put my SIM card in it to activate it?

i have an att phone that i dont like. if i can get a cheap one that i do liek, can i put my SIM card in and use it? or do i have to call and get it activated first?

  1. you can just put your SIM card in and start talking.
  2. You need to make sure your SIM card will fit. I tried to do that with the last one I got.
