activating sim card att phone?

My mother had att and was available for an upgrade but never upgrades-just used the same old phone. So she used her upgrade to get my daughter a new phone and it came with a new sim card. They both have att--can my daughter just put her sim card in the new phone and everything be ok? It has 3g on the sim card Would everything be avtivated ok?
