LG Wireless Phone

AT&T took my IMEI but didnt give unlock code. Can I unlock the same RAZR or can they block based on IMEI ?

I have an old ATT(blue) account and recently got a new Cingular (Orange) Razr from a friend. I thought it would automatically work, but it didn't. I called ATT and after 2 hrs they told me that even if they give me the "Unlock code/Subsidy password" the new phone wouldn't work because its "made" for the new Orange network. They also took my IMEI by first saying that they can give me the code. Now, my question is, even if I get it unlocked from a shop or Ebay, would it still work? or because ATT now has my IMEI, they can permanently lock that device from connecting to their network? Secondly, what would be a good source to unlock it myself...? Thanks

  1. I don't know why the rep had to be such a butthead. They can't lock the phone permanently, and if the phone is outside of it's contract, they will issue you an unlock code even if it is on your account. The reason the rep was a butthead, though, is that you don't need to unlock the phone, you just have to get a new sim card issued. You can keep the plan that you are on and have the simcard swapped so that you use the newest network while you still pay the old rate plan. Stop into an AT&T store and ask them for a new sim card to go into the new razr phone. You need to know that once you do that, you won't be able to use your old phone unless you have it unlocked though. Once they issue the new sim card, you can't get back into a blue sim card. That's a better route for you to go anyway because you'll be able to use any AT&T or Cingular phone going forward from here on. Right now you can only use the old AT&T wireless (blue) phones. Hope that helps, Nick
