Can i use my old "pay as you go" phone with my new plan and number?

I previously had a pay as you go phone plan from cingular/att&t, and my account expired. So i was wondering if anybody knew if i can just use the same phone i used for the old account, for my new account im going to set up? Cant you just switch the sim cards out? or is it required that i buy a completely new phone?
