How do I deactivate my verizon wireless phone so I can switch my cell phone to a new verizon phone.?

I have a Verizon wireless Juke and I want to switch it to another verizon wireless phone. Please help. how do you do it? does it cost anything?

1. If it's not under contract you call *228 and choose option 3. It will ask you what # you want to change it to, it will ask for the password (usually a 4 or 5 digit code or the last 4 of the SSN of the owner on the account. If it goes through, you will hear music. If it doesn't, it will send you to customer care.
