How to fix my Belkin wifi adapter? ?
I've had my adapter (USB) for about 8 months or so, and about 2 months ago it started going really slow. I had this problem with the same model adapter, so I took it back and got a replacement, thinking its just a fault. Exact same problem with this one. The adapter becomes hot to touch after about 2 minutes of being plugged into my pc. When it's hot it is very slow, and as a result, I'm typing this on my phone. I know it isn't just the router, as we have another pc downstairs, with faster Internet. What can I do to make it work properly again? Thanks.

- from your information, i think the problem resides in your PC, not your adapter. check your anti virus protection and fully scan your PC
- Try the following: - Verify with the mfg site of the wireless adapter to determine if there are known cases of the device running hot. Sometimes this is normal and goes unnoticed when things are working fine. Then again, most electronics should be kept somewhat cool and heat can surely slow things down if not fry the device. It would pay to look it up on the mfg site however. - Ensure you have the latest software drivers for the device - Try unplugging the adapter, removing all software for it properly, restart your computer (start shutdown, Restart) and reload the software. Restart your computer after software reload of the device and then plug it back in. Try again. Remember: the same model of the device may have a newer revision and perhaps works slightly different with drivers, etc. - Use a short USB cable to move the device a few inches from the computer and possibly to a better reception point. - Try using your laptop near the router, as in the same room, to determine if any natural signal interference has developed near you where the computer is not running so fast. - Try using the laptop on a wired connection to see if there is a gross difference in speed. In other words, wired is faster but if your computer still goes slow online then you know it wasn't wireless at all but most likely malicious software (virus, spyware, etc) or corrupted windows files. Anyway - you are not out of luck and you need to rule out some of the possibilities above will help lead you to resolve.
- usb sockets are provided in pairs each socket must be capable of supplying 0.5amps to meet the spec. some chipsets assume you will not be drawing that much power from both scokets of a pair. a laptop could have 3 pairs of usb sockets, make sure you use a socket without anything else connected in the paired socket. also since most usb sticks are High powered these days, its especially important to have strong signals, as the stick may up its power requirements to get the signal strength up in weak signal situations. also each laptop has a power supply. now they are calculated to provide a certain Current which will equate to a certain watts. eg some hp laptops have a 60w supply and a 90 watt supply. the 90 watts being for a laptop with higher usage requirements such as two hard drives, or larger battery. if too many things are drawing too much power then the supply hasnt got much option and may reduce volts. this may have the net effect of making things work too hard making them get hot. so check your supply is suitable(just in case its not an original of the correct wattage) ==================================== having said all that, there are other people asking this same question. which could be explaind by unsuitable power supplies, as they often get replaced. or there is a belkin problem i would suggest you place a question on one of their forums.
- Talk to Belkin support, they are very good.
