Text Messages received as rectangles?

Some of my text messages are received as "No Content" and when I open them the message is filled with a bunch of rectangles. This happens at least once a day and I do not know if it is a problem from my phone or from my friend's phone. I have Verizon, an LG NV 3. Does anybody know what's wrong with my phone or how to fix it? Thanks!

1. perhaps ur phone doesnt support venacular stuff nsupports only english. the msgs originally must have been typed in vernacular..!
