How do you change the passcode on a free samsung att phone?

the person won't email me back and att store said they tried the default codes but she changed it to her code. I contacted samsung and they won't help me because they can't tell if I am the real owner. I explained to them how the owner gave it to me. I hear that you can unlock phones sometimes. can anyone give me some advice who has been through this?
