Wifi bad in one room?
Hello Everyone, Here's my situation. My room is roughly 30 feet away from our wireless router. I use it to surf the web on my laptop, ipod, and play my Xbox 360. It was working perfectly until about 3 weeks ago. We went on vacation for a few nights and unplugged the surge protector along with everything else before we left. Well, when we got back, my internet was normal until a few days later. I usually had a three to four bar in my room, now the most I can get is a measly two bar. I tried adjusting the channels and opening different ports. Eventually we purchased a new router, replacing our Netgear with a Belkin. The connection in my room is still horrible. Also, when the phone rings, the WiFi completely disconnects until the call has ended. We have been using cable for the past five years and it hasn't ever given us this many problems. I appreciate any answers or suggestions you guys have. Cheers No furniture was moved. The monitor, computer, modem, and router are all within a few feet of each other. Also my house is about 130 years old with thin wooden walls. Should I buy a booster, repeater or is there another solution???

- the signal will be victim to walls, corners, did someone move furniture around? What's beside the modem? look for the physical limitations for this problem.

Well that says to me that your phone/s are interfering with your wifi signal probably because they are both operating in the same frequency band or channel and this also is probably related to your generally poor wifi signal. Try an isolation test- basically disconnect and unplug all your phones, power cycle (restart) your wifi router/access point and your PC and see what that does for your wifi connectivity. You may need to change the frequency band or channel used by your cordless phones and/or your Belkin router( do this in the wireless settings page of your router's config usually at http://192.168.2.1 )- if two or more wireless devices are operating within the 2.4 GHz frequency band they need to be at least 5 channels apart to avoid signal overlap eg- if cordless phone is using channel 1 you should set your Belkin's wifi to channel 6 or higher, If your cordless phone uses channel 6 you can set your wifi to channels 1 or 11 without conflict.
