What is a good age to get your child a mobile phone/cell phone?

My 11 (12 in a few months) is starting senior school (middle school to you Americans) in September and I'm thinking of getting her a cell phone. She hasn't asked for one and she said she doesn't mind if she has one or not but I'm thinking I could give her a basic phone for her as she will be taking the school coach everyday. Shall I give her one? I meant to say "11 (12 in a few months) year old daughter". Sorry about that.

  1. if the time feels right to you, then the time is right. it always feels better when you know you can contact your child whenever you need to or more importantly, that she can contact you whenever she needs to
  2. i think that is an appropriate age. but i would also cheek it every night. :)
  3. I think that's a good age as she will also be going shopping with her friends without an adult now so I think you should give her a phone, even if it's just a basic one or an old one you used to have. What if her school coach is running late and you get worried and you don't know where she is? Set her a texting and calls limit though. Hope I helped, Milana x
  4. Well it really depends. I got my first phone when I was in grade 3, but it was rly basic and everything, and the only reason was because I had to walk home alone so I had it just incase of an emergency if something would happen, because I lived 15 minutes away from my school. Then in grade 5 I just kinda gave it to my parents because I really didn't need it, because someone always licked me up from school. Now I'm in grade 8 going to grade 9 and I'm 14 and I'm getting a phone again because for school I need to to take the bus :) Hope this helps!
  5. 11 year old is a pretty good age. The phone will be very useful for you because at her age, she's going to start hanging out with friends and staying after school, and it will be helpful for her to have a phone to call you. also, in case of emergencies... like if she needs money or she left something at home.
  6. Yes you should get her a cell phone because not only is she going to middle school she might want to go somewhere like the movies, and how will she contact you to pick her up. On the other hand she might have an emergency and need to call you. Not to worry you ,but I think you should get her one.
  7. i first got one when i was that age 12 and i had to share it with my sis and we only haf 60 min for 2 months. it was only for calling our parents pretty much so u could give her a basic one just for emergencies and calling u then when shes 13 get her texting and stuff :)
  8. You should I got one, when I was 11 because that's when I started going out without my family and it made sense for me to have one. I think the age she is the perfect age to get her one.
  9. Yes, i think you should give her a cell phone. It can be used in case of emergencies and you can check up on her and keep her safe and sound.
  10. 14. Sorry but I just don't believe in kids having cellphones. We've coped without them for centuries until the past fifteen years. I don't see why a child should have a cellphone in case of a (extremely unlikely) emergency.
  11. umm i think 12 or 13 not maybe more but not less as age so just try to do it!!
  12. Yeah, thats when i got mine
  13. Well if you think she is responsible enough and she needs the phone, then go ahead. 12 or 13 is a good age to get them a phone as long as you know that they aren't misusing it for other things. So get her a basic phone to take calls and that should be totally fine :)
  14. A good age for a child to have a cell phone is whatever age the parent feels is appropriate for THAT child. I have 11 and 13 year olds who have had a phone for several years (first, a shared prepaid that was then added to our contract and shared, they now each have their own). One of my children had a friend that had his own cell cell at 5- he had health concerns and the parents wanted the child or his caregivers to be able to reach them at any time.
