how do you download a ring tone on a cell phone?

I have a mp3 ring tone on my computer which I would like as a ring tone on my LG cell phone. I emailed it to the cell phone but it says "This file is currently not supported for viewing" when I try to open the attachment on the phone, what am I doing wrong?

1. First try seeing if the mp3 file is not too big if it is, then your phone will not let you use it as a ringtone. Does your phone have a slot for a tiny memory card ? if it does buy one, it's only $8 for a 2GB card, that way you can put whatever you want in there, music, ringtones, videos, pictures etc .. that way you dont have any issues trying to download ringtones into your phone ;)
