Why are there hardly any good cell phones available for people who don't want smartphones?

My contract ends later this year and I've already begun looking at new phones. I was disappointed to find that Verizon wireless and all the other wireless companies force you to buy a smartphone or choose from their very limited collection of regular phones. I did find one that I liked (the KIN Two) but I don;t know if it'll still be available by the time I can get a new phone. Why aren't there any good phones that don't require data plans any more??
