How can Amazon Wireless sell phones for a penny?

I'm looking into buy a new verizon cell phone and I was told about Amazon Wireless. A lot of their phones are only a penny to buy. How is this possible on a phone that is usually $100? Has anybody bought a phone from them before? How does it all work with renewing you contract and buying multiple phones, and why are they so cheap?

1. Its a penny WITH the 2 year plan. I got mad excited when i saw that, but then i saw the plan stuff :/ The cheapest one i ordered [w/o plan] was the samsung unlocked, so it works with all GMS carriers =]
