ATT Go Phone with iPhone?

I have AT&T prepay go phone and I'd like to get a data plan for a smart phone since I've got an older model. Can I buy an old Apple iPhone and just put the sim card into it? Someone told me that AT&T go phone plans don't work with iPhones. I do NOT want to sign up for any contracts. Thanks.
