Can A BlackBerry Curve 8530 connect via wifi without phone service?

A friend has a BlackBerry Curve 8530 and he says it has wifi. He was going to throw it out. My question is can the phone connect via wireless LAN without phone service since it is using wifi? Thanks in advance for your answers.

1. Technically yes, I have that model, and have wifi at home here, I use the wifi more at home cuz it saves my data plan usage. You can turn the network off and just check the wifi in the "manage connections" app. Although it get's a bit complicated since most carriers want you to have them "activate" your phone, usually with the strings attached to their data plan.
