how can i make free cals over wifi with no carrier on android phone?

Bought an android phone but have no service. I wanted the phone for mp3 player, portable browser, etc... Now I am wondering if I can make free calls over wifi. Phone is not rooted and i am not that learned on all this. Newbie guide would help
