Can I use Blackberry Messenger without wifi or 3G Network free of charge?

If for example im using a Blackberry curve without the 3G network and am not in a wifi hot spot, can i use Blackberry messenger using the regular phone network free of charge? I know this is in the wrong section, but people in section dedicated to technology don't really answer this question :(
