If I have an unlocked iPhone w/ warranty, how do I get it repaired/replaced by Apple?

Can I just take it in there, with a new OS install, and no SIM card in it? I actually have my old ATT sim card, but there's no service on it. Would that be ok? Or, I have a buddy with ATT and an iPhone, can I just give him my phone and he can go into the store to take care of it with his SIM? This is all theoretical, if it were to have issues. Thanks! Any ideas appreciated. Don't just say, it's unlocked so no warranty.

1. You will have to do a new OS install of 3.1.3, You can take it with NO simcard, no problem. but you will need to take it to a APPLE store, not a AT&T store.. AT&T does not support the warranty :)
