Can I use my friends' old att phone with t-mobile as my mobile provider?

My t-mobile phone is breaking down and my friend has an old att phone. Can I use her phone with t-mobile as my mobile provider? Do I have to pay to unlock her old att phone to use it or can I just stick my SIM card into the phone and use it from there?

1. You can find the type of phone, and then search on google the phones name and its unlock code. I wouldnt pay to unlock it. And no you cant just stick ur SIM card in..it will ask for unlock code.
