Does WiFi help cell phone reception?

I have Verizon and live in a dead zone, no service anywhere. my friend has t-mobile and gets service bc his phone connects to wifi. new blackberries for verizon have wifi, if i get that phone i know i can access the internet in more areas, but will i get better cell phone reception? i'm tired of having to walk out of my house to make a phone call. i heard wifi will give you cell phone reception. help please!

1. I have had nothing better on the phone that I have just because I have wifi. But there is speculation that if you have vonage it will be better since vonage connects the internet to your phone. i don't have vonage but my frined does. He lives in an At&t dead zone. ask other about that too.
