Can you use any att phone with a prepaid sim card?

I have a pay as you go phone but nearly all of my buttons are broken at this point and a friend offered me their old att phone...can I just put my sim card in that phone and have it work?

1. If it's not a smartphone from AT&T, you can use it. Basically any phone other than a smartphone can be used with prepaid service.
