Is there a way to get a wifi phone from att without signing up for a data plan?

I would like to have a phone capable to surf the web when I am on campus and what not but i don't want to pay $30 a month for a data plan. I know I can buy an unlocked phone but i don;t have 500 dollars just lying around.

1. yes as the wifi isn't part of the data plan... it uses the built in browser to access a local wifi internet access point. the data plan uses the phone sevice/connection to access the web like a dial up/dsl connection.
2. sadly but no not unless you buy a phone from ebay that has wifi or get an itouch when you do get that smart phone you can take out the data plan after some couple of months
