What's the best way to switch cell-phone carriers?
My contract with Verizon Wireless is now over, the plan I have with them doesn't suit my lifestyle, and my phone is now somewhat archaic. I'd like to switch to U.S. Cellular because I've heard great things, and their plans/phones suit my lifestyle much better. So, would I have to terminate with VW first before I switch to USC? I'd also like to keep my same phone number.

- Nope, just go to the new carrier and tell them you want to switch. They take care of transferring your number over. After that's done, you can cancel with the old carrier and they'll send you a final bill. I did this myself in 2005 (T-Mobile to Sprint) and it was easy as pie.
- As long as your contract is up, you can switch. Just go to the other carrier and tell them you want to switch and keep your number. They should turn everything off with Verizon.
- Do not terminate with verizon or you will lose your number. Contact the new provider and tell them you want to port your current number to their service. They will take care of it (you will need your current account number and other info, so I'd have an old statement from verizon handy). Once the number has been transfered, you will no longer have an account with verizon. You don't have to terminate or cancel anything.
