can i use just the text and phone features on iphne 3g if i have att with out paying huge bill just tempererly

i have att and i just purchased an iphone 3g but have not activated it yet is there a way i can just insert my sim and just use the text and phone feature until im situated and start my iphone contract?

1. the new iphones require a different sim card because they are 3g, so you will need to bring it to at&t to activate it on another sim card, but you do not need the data plan, but you will not be able to access the internet without wifi. if u use wifi, it is free. i hope that helped, & if u have any other questions about it, feel free 2 email me.
