How do you save files or downloads as ringtones on Verizon LG Versa?

How can I save my downloads and free ringtones to the Verizon LG Versa phones? Will not set as ringtone. Been at it for hours. Help! Human Psych - thanks for answering. I do have saved MP3 files but how do I get them to show as a ringtone rather than "my sounds" or "my music"? I can't delegate it to ringtones for some reason. Thanks so much!

1. You are only allowed to set MP3 files as ringtones, and they must be saved into your phone or memory card. If you download them, and they are .mp3 and playable, then you'd be able to set them as a ringtone, otherwise there is something incompatible with the format.
