  1. The best answer for cheap phone calls at home is using VoIP. For a list of providers please visit http://www.voiprater.com. The only thing a VoIP service requires is a high speed internet connection and a phone to plug into their supplied box. If you already have DSL, Cable or some other high speed internet service then you can add VoIP for a very low fee. A basic VoIP plan with unlimited calling in the US, Canada (and many other countries) will run you as low as $18 per month including all taxes and fees. You can also prepay for up to 2 years on some plans so for $200 up front you get 2 years of service (averages $8.34 per month). So if you know you are going to be keeping your phone you can for quite some time. Another great feature of VoIP is that you can take it with you. Anywhere you have a broadband connection, you can plug in your VoIP box and plug in any regular telephone. The box will automatically set itself up when you plug in and viola! You have your home phone with you in Fiji or wherever your travels take you. All of your calls back home are still free. Going off to college? No problem plug your VoIP box into your internet connection at the dorm/apartment and you have your same phone number and everything. One last piece of advice, if you need multiple handsets in the house, you can invest about $99 and purchase a home phone system with a base unit and 4 wireless handsets. Just plug the base into your VoIP box and all 4 handsets can be placed throughout the house and you have phone service available everywhere. Have fun!
