Why would you want wifi on your phone?

The people at verizon told me that if I get a smartphone, I basically have to sign up for a package that's extra and will have internet available on their 3G network. So, why all the buzz about wifi if you're gonna have internet anywhere your phone gets coverage anyway?

1. Wifi is faster, and if you don't have coverage in a certain area, you can still get on the internet. Also, there is Wifi-calling.
2. Wi-Fi lets u access the internet from anywhere with a wireless router for free if the router is not blocked. If the router is blocked u would need a "wep key" that consist of many different letters and numbers.(i.e. 56234YF6406GF9GDLF74JE39FC498553H8). With the verizon package ur paying extra for it when u could just use the Wi-Fi capability in the smart phone.
