I'm going to buy a WIFI capable phone, do I need an internet package from my carrier?

I have Verizon Wireless, and I was going to upgrade my phone and get an Omnia, this phone is WIFI capable, but I cannot get the VCAST pack to get internet for cheap. My question is, if I go to a wifi spot to use the internet on my cell phone, will Verizon Wireless charge me?

1. no, the idea of WiFi is that the phone doesnt use your carriers bandwidth. you must make sure the phone is set to use the WiFi before you attempt to use WiFi data.
