LG Wireless Phone

setting up wireless internet question...?

I would like to get wirless internet from qwest. I just got a new computer, and I would now like wireless. The issue is that my phone line isn't by my computer. (it's about 15 feet away) How would I set this up, and what should I order?

  1. they will give you wireless router and instructions on how to set it up all you need to have just a wireless card on your computer
  2. I'm not familiar with Qwest.. but you have to "order" wireless internet from them...? Wow... what a scam... ANYWAY. If you're still using a dial-up, I don't think you can get WAN (Wireless Area Network) from it. You need to get a cable connection. If you do have one (the cable is a little flater than normal phone lines), then you need a wireless router, and from there it's pretty easy to set-up. Just follow the instruction on the box or whatever than you'll have your WAN set-up. Good Luck.
  3. you need a wifi router. Good brands are linksys, netgear, and dlink. They are relatively cheap (about $50 us dollars) You can set up the router beside your dsl (i'm assuming dsl since you said phone line) modem. Is your computer a laptop or desktop? It's it's a modern laptop it probably has built in wifi. If it's a desktop, you probably need to buy a wireless adapter for it. When you first set up your router it needs to be hard wired to your computer though, so think about that if it is a desktop. Most wifi routers also have four wired ports for desktops and other non-wifi capable machines. Once you have set up the router and enabled wifi, you can go wireless.
  4. When you order specify that you want a wireless modem they should be able to furnish that. Most of the wireless router or wireless modem will come with a 20 ft cable(looks like a phone cable), so you should the parts you need, including the dsl cables
