LG Wireless Phone

What else do I need besides Netgear USB for wireless?

Okay I have one computer in my livingroom with a Qwest DSL modem which has an antenna and they say it can be used for wireless (although the wireless light never lights up). I have a second computer in my bedroom. Both run Windows XP and MSN Premium. I have installed Netgear on both, but both computers say no wireless network is available? I was told at Radio Shack that I didn't need a second modem, and that I didn't need to plug directly into my first computer since they are going to be working independant of one another. They said all I needed was the Netgear USB adapter. For awhile it was working, but then my neighbor moved and as soon as they cut off her phone, my wireless stopped (as did one of my other neighbors) so I guess in actuality we were piggybacking off hers and not our own. What do I need to do?

  1. If you have a wireless access point, it must not be configured right. The Netgear USB device will find the strongest AP, and all others as well. See if you can configure the wireless access point router
  2. Sounds like you need to configure your Qwest DSL modem for wireless. I'm not familiar with this modem, so I would refer you to call Qwest and they will walk you through the procedure and support you if you have any problems. If this modem connects wirelessly to Qwest rather than being a wireless router, then you will need to purchase a wireless router. Maybe you and your neighbor can share the cost and the line if this is the case.
  3. For this you have to check the manual of your modem. I think the problem is your router has set some kind of security so people can't use your internet without a security key. Go inside the modem and check your wireless setting. Make sure that the WEP setting is unable (notes: this will allow other people to use your internet like you've used your neighbor.) Play around and read the manual. Read more about WEP here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wired_Equivalent_Privacy
  4. I have a Siemens Speed Stream wireless DSL modem, but the signal doesn't go far, so I add a netgear wireless router. It works well. I think you need to check with your Internet services provider to find out your modem can use wireless. Can you use the cable to connect the modem to get into Internet? The wireless light won't came on until your computer connect to it. (by wireless) You should make your wireless network secured. Call netgear and your ISP for help to set up your network. Good luck.
