What is the function of 'INTERCOM' button on wireless phones?

On Panasonic wireless phones there is this button both one the phone and it's answering machine. It's different from locator's function as it's on the phone itsself too. I wonder what is that for? It's a cordless phone.What is the 'INTERCOM' button for on the phone?

3. It's for use to talk to the base unit and vice-versa. Like a walkie talkie..
