GPS vs. lg vu media package?

my mom wants me to buy a gps system before i go off to college. well i think it would be better to get the media package on the lg vu which would include gps internet and tv. someone also told me that gpses require expensive upgrades. which would be better in the long run.....a gps or my phone media package?

1. I have Alltel, recently part of Verizon in merger... I got smartphone package which includes unlimited internet use GPS, EMail, alll that is on the internet
