Can you buy just a battery for a cell phone?

A friend of mine recently dropped their LG Rythm phone in wet grass. It has appeared to suffer from water damage and is failing to work properly. He doesnt have insurane on the phone so inorder to get a new one he would have to pay full retail price. Would it be cheaper just to buy a new battery for it? Would buying just a new battery even help? His carrier is Alltel. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

1. Yes. Amazon & Ebay usually have good prices, the carrier and manufacturer may say them as well. The price for the battery for that phone on Amazon right now is really low.
