What is the best cell phone plan to get if you are stationed in Okinawa, Japan?

My sister is in the Marines and is going to be stationed in Okinawa. I've been put in charge of figuring out the best cell phone plan for her. She has verizon so if she could stick with that it would be great. If not it's ok. I just want to hear what the best ideas are so I can relay them to her. What are the best plans, phones, etc?

  1. you can try japanese yahoo answers cus i doubt many people here know that.
  2. stay with it
  3. to the best of my knowledge at and t is the only provider that offers international calling.and their fees are ridiculous and you have to be a customer in good standing for 3 mo to do this.Look up Skypes. My son uses it on his computer. and he is in Iraq.type in skypes in your search engine and find out more about it.Also you must have a 2100 mega hertz phone in order for it to work in Japan.AT and T only has 2-3 phones that fit that criteria.
  4. Using a US phone with a US company overseas would be ridiculously expensive. Most phones you get here aren't even compatible with the Japanese cellular network anyways. She's going to have to get a Japanese phone and sign up with a Japanese service provider. This isn't difficult, she just needs to ask her fellow marines when she gets there and they can point her in the right direction.
  5. I live in Sasebo and have DoCoMo. It's not the cheapest, but the phones are nice. Most of the people on base have Softbank phone service. As far as I know it's pretty reliable. They have places on base to set it up. It will probably be much easier for her to do it herself when she gets to Japan. Tell her to talk with FFSC. They'll definitely help. Good luck!
