Is there a way to use Wifi for free on a verizon cell phone?

I just got the samsung sch 760 for verizon wireless and it has wifi, i was wondering if there was any way to use the wifi without being charged for data as i used it once by accident and was charged per kb. I've heard that you can do it from removing any data plan from your phone, but i have no idea whether that would be possible or how to do it if it is possible. Any help with this would be very much appreciated.

1. When you were charged per kb, you were probably using the cellular network, not wifi. You need to learn how to tell which is which on your phone.
2. If I were you I would pay for a Internet data plan and then use VOIP for your calling minutes for a next to nothing rate... about one cent per minute through Wcell.
