Whats the process when canceling a phone company like Verizon?

My family and i have the verizonwireless phone plan however we want to switch to att. however the one problem is that 2 of my family members are still locked in the plan so i have to pay a early termination fee. I want to to know like what is that process gonna be?

1. call them tell them pay them cancellation fee
2. Verizon has a new cancellation policy where they prorate your cancellation fee based on how many months you have left on your contract. It is $225 Normally, but goes down each month you have your contract. Nice little perk for those that want an early out. (your not going to be happy with AT&T, just to forewarn you)
