If I want an iPhone, do I have to be on att? Or does apple have their own phone company?

- I'm pretty sure u have to buy it from att
- Short answer: Yes you have to be on ATT if you are in the US. Long answer: No if you purchase a used one, or buy one without an contract from ATT, (which will be very expensive) you can then jail break the phone and use it with any GSM carrier. In the us that is only t-mobile and a few regional carriers. Take note that jail breaking can void your warranty and it it could brick the phone. Also you could run up a bunch of data charges if your current plan doesn't include unlimited data.
- apple iphone is available for only at&t its available at att online att stores att authorized dealer apple store it will be activated with new att service or u can add a line to ur existing account
- If you want the $199 price, you have to sign a 2 year contract with AT&T. If you are willing to spend a lot more money, iPhones without contracts are on eBay and other websites. You can jailbreak the phone and use it with T-Mobile.
