How to buy cell phone without 2-year agreement?

How do I switch cellphones on my network (alltel) without taking on the 2-year agreement ? I'm with Alltel, and I really want this phone, and I really don't want to pay over 200 $ for it. Someone told me that its possible to buy a phone on Ebay or something and use it. Is that possible with Alltel ? How would I do that ? How much would it cost to back out of a 2-year agreement ?

1. I think you have to buy an unlocked phone fo Alltel on Ebay. Search unlocked Alltel phones at ebay.
2. Unlocked phones on Ebay are usually still expensive unless you get one from an individual, and even they get pricey if they are unused. What's the problem with the contract? No one likes them, but I like it a whole lot better than the ridiculous cost of phones without the subsidy. Breaking contract is not cheap ... the one I just signed with ATT says it can run $150. There are ways to entice the carrier to cancel your contract though, if you get to the point where you need to cancel. But that's another whole issue ....
