Why do I need to pay to use the WiFi on my Blackberry 8120?

If I unlock the phone will I be able to make voice calls using the wifi? I'm not sure why the phone company charges $10/mo to have this enabled. Well... because they can, but I don't think it's right. Cincinnati Bell Wireless is my carrier.

1. Apparently all the phones with that capability are like that, as I found out when I wanted to buy the new Iphone 3G - $10/mo isn't that much, Vodafone where I live is charging the equivalent of $28/mo. The guy told me it would be the same for a Blackberry. Thieves!
