Will i get charged for using wifi on my phone if its capable and i dont have a data plan?

I have a Samsung i760 that is wifi capable and live on a campus that has free wifi, but will i get charged through verizon for using it if my phone plan doesnt have a data plan on it?

1. wifi is wifi. its always free. on the other hand, im quite surprised that youve gotten away with having a smartphone on verizon, and them not finding out. Verizon requires all smartphones to get a data plan.
