802.11b or 802.11g mode for repeater?

I have a Belkin WURE repeater with a D-Link high-gain omnidirectional antenna. I'd like to set this up so I can connect back to MY network (printers, internet, file-sharing) when I'm over at the neighbor's house (probably 500-1000 feet) visiting...quite often since I've been building a nature trail with them. Maybe even use it to extend WiFi from their house to a camping platform we built (planning to camp out and watch movies some time, WiFi would be an extra). I know I can get the distance but I only recieve it at about 25-30% strength maximum. My question is whether it would be better to use 802.11g mode (default) or 801.11b mode to achieve the maximum clarity over the distance. I'm at a loss, I've read that G has crosstalk interference handeling but B is slower so I think it may perform better (hearing larger percentage of packets). Previously, I'd found that B is less friendly with 2.4GHz cordless phones although it can work and G just stops working with the phone on. Yep, it's signal not speed. I guess the bigger question is which mode should work best at lowest signal... I can "see" the network all the way down to 12% strength but it only connects above 20% and packet loss makes it unusable until 30% in G mode. Trial-and-error takes a while but works...just hoping to find someone with a techie explaination of what should be best :)

  1. Why not try them both and use what works better? I would stick with G however, I think signal strength is the issue here, not speed.
