Help with wi fi and my t mobile dash?

Okay so say i go into a free wi fi area like paradise bakery will the connection only give me a 54mbs ?? i've read reviews on the phone and keep seeing how it has quick internet although mines extremly slow i connected it to my comp with a belkin router and got 54mbps so if i went somewhere with free wifi is it possible i could reach a higher connection? also whats a good router to use to get good connection with my phone from my house?

1. the speed of the internet is not always measured in the speed of the wireless network. all wireless-G devices have a standard limit of 54 Mbps. having 54 Mbps does not mean that you are constantly receiving 54 Mbits of data. it just means that you are connected to the network at that speed. the speed of the internet connection can be measured or estimated through the use of online speed test sites like www.speedtest.net . try testing your internet connection for its speed. you might see what's your estimated speed. most probably, it wouldn't be 54 Mbps because it is the wireless network's speed.
