- Some companies ship these routers with a password already set (a wireless network key). These are usually affixed to the device if this is the case in the form of a sticker. When you receive the device, plug it in as instructed (details in the box) and you can attempt to connect using the wireless network config tool on your laptop. If you are prompted for a key, look on the router (underneath or on the side) or in the packaging to see if there is any evidence of a key to use. If not, you may have to physically connect to your router from your laptop using a standard ethernet cable. You should then be able to connect to and configure your router using the software provided. When you recieve this item, its usually easier to put the CD in your machine and follow the onscreen instructions. Belkin do have a very user friendly front end to setting up and configuring their devices and I find them extremely easy to user for even novice computer users.
- The instructions below assume a bog standard Belkin that has NOT been customised by your ISP . Its possible that they may have altered the login name/password. You should be connected via an ethernet cable to do all this Otherwise here goes this is of necessity a long post, so print it off first 1) Wireless setup comes in 2 parts setting the router up and setting the laptop up. In your browser, type “192.168.2.1” (do not type in anything else such as “http://” or “www”). Then press the “Enter” key. 2)You will see the Modem Router’s home page in your browser window. The Modem Router ships with no password entered. In the login screen, leave the password blank and click the “Submit” button to log in.Enter the initial ISP settings such as user name and login details PPOE etc and any other information in the initial setup screen 3) You need to know the name of the wireless network. To identify your wireless network, a name called the SSID is used. The SSID is your network name. The default network name of the Modem Router is “Belkin N1 Wireless” followed by six digits that are unique to your Modem Router. Your network name will look something like “Belkin123456”. Click on the the “Wireless” tab in security and note down the SSID 4) You need to setup a wireless network with security. I assume your laptop has wireless and that it is switched on. By default, wireless security on the router is disabled. To enable security, you will need access the security settings, click “Security” on the “Wireless” tab 5)go to the “Security” page under “Wireless” and select “WPA/WPA2-Personal (PSK)” from the “Security Mode” drop-down menu 6)For “Authentication”, select “WPA-PSK this will need to be the same when you come to set up the laptop wireless 7)For “Encryption Technique”, select “TKIP”, “AES”, or “TKIP+AES”. This setting will have to be identical on the wireless clients that you set up. 8)Enter your pre-shared key (PSK). This can be from eight to 63 characters and can be letters, numbers, or symbols. This same key must be used on all of the wireless clients that you set up. Write the PSK down on the underneath of the router in indelible ink 9)Click “Apply Changes” to finish. You must now set all wireless clients to match these settings. You can now close the browser window 10) Go to your laptop and disconnect the ethernet cable. In the bottom Rt corner and Rt click on the network icon for Windows XP click on view available networks, for Vista connect to a network 11) Click on the network that matches the SSID you noted down and you should be asked for a passphrase/password which you wrote down underneath the router. Enter the passphrase, if all goes well you should now be able to connect. The passphrase is case sensitive and has to be entered EXACTLY as in the router http://www.belkin.com/support/article/?lid=en&pid=F5D9230-4&aid=10177&scid=222
