Which is better for a cell phone? Hard Case or silicone?

I just bought a LG Decoy and have an option of either one.

1. The hard case protects the phone better from damage. Helps if water just splashes a little on it, and helps if you drop it to help it not break as much. I'm getting the LG Voyager for Valentine's Day! I CANNOT WAIT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :)
2. go hard because the silicone one left a ring on mine where you hook it to your pocket It left a ware ring the Hard Case dose not and the hard case in more protective of drops
